Do You Need a Permit to Shoot a Music Video in Las Vegas?
When a Las Vegas music video needs a film permit, what Clark County requires, and how to plan locations so your shoot does not get shut down.

Yes, often you do. If your music video shoots outdoors in unincorporated Clark County, you need a film permit. That includes a lot of the places artists want to film in Las Vegas. Here is what the rules say, where they change, and how to plan so the day does not get shut down.
Checked against Clark County's official film permit page on October 6, 2026. Rules and fees change, so confirm on the county's film permit FAQ before you apply.
The short answer
Clark County's page says a film permit is required for any music video filmed in unincorporated Clark County. Filming inside a home or building with the owner's written agreement does not need a county permit. Once you step outside, it can.
Las Vegas is split into several jurisdictions, and the permit you need depends on which one you are standing in.
What Clark County asks for
According to the county's page:
- Apply at least 10 calendar days before your first shoot day.
- A $45 processing fee, paid online after your application is reviewed.
- $1,000,000 in insurance that names Clark County and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) as additional insured.
- A hold harmless agreement, always.
- A location agreement for any private property you film on.
Drones need prior FAA approval, and the county says they are prohibited in residential areas.
Where the county permit does not apply
Clark County's permit covers unincorporated areas. Its page lists these as not covered:
- The City of Las Vegas (which includes downtown and Fremont Street)
- The City of Henderson
- The City of North Las Vegas
- Boulder City
- Mesquite
- Las Vegas Boulevard north of Sahara Avenue
Each of those has its own film permit process. If your location is in one of them, contact that city's film office and ask what they require. Do not assume the county rules carry over.
Private property and casinos
Private property still needs the owner's written OK. Casinos and resorts are separate from the county permit, and the county recommends you contact the property directly. Many Las Vegas Boulevard sidewalks near the Strip are private property, so a hotel may need to approve filming there.
Plan locations before you plan anything else
A music video is only as shootable as its locations. Do it in this order:
- Write your location list. List every place, inside and outside.
- Sort each one by jurisdiction. County, city, Henderson, or private property.
- Get insurance quotes. You need the $1,000,000 coverage in place for the application, so start early.
- Apply at least 10 calendar days early. More is safer.
- Have a backup. An indoor location with written permission can save the day if a permit does not come through.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Who is handling permits and insurance, and is it in the price?
- Which of my locations need a permit?
- What is the backup plan if a location falls through?
A crew that has done this before can tell you what each location needs.
